15% Power Capacity from Renewable Sources during 10th Plan Period so far ; 1990 MW added 1744 Villages Electrified through Non Conventional Route

for Ministry of New and Renewable Energy | Date - 18-03-2005

Shri Vilas Muttemwar, Minister for Non Conventional for Energy Sources while replying to a question informed the Lok Sabha today that as much as 15% of additional grid interactive power capacity amounting to 1990 MW from renewable sources was commissioned during 10th Plan period upto 31.12.2004. This is higher than the Government’s aim of deploying around 10% of the additional grid interactive power installed capacity from renewables during the 10th and 11th Plan period. The total grid interactive installed capacity for power generation has reached 5,500 MW as on 31.12.2004.

Shri Muttemwar further informed that of the power generation capacity added during first two years and nine months of the 10th Plan, two-third or 10% has come from wind power alone with the balance 5% coming from hydro power (2%) and bio-energy (3%). He informed that the estimated potential for power generation from renewable energy sources such as wind, small hydro and bio-mass in the country is about 80,000 MW. Shri Muttemwar stressed that his Ministry has several schemes/programmes for deployment support of renewable energy systems/devices across the country. Under some of these central financial assistance is provided to state governments, promoters or households (latter through the state governments).

The Minister in reply to another question informed the House that 1744 remote villages have been electrified through renewable means as on 31.12.2004 against 5000 remote villages expected to be electrified through non-conventional route during the 10th Plan period. In these villages grid extension is either not cost-effective or feasible. Apart from this, 3.5 million households have been provided biogas plants and one million households, solar home lighting systems. Describing the progress of deployment of renewable energy systems/devices as highly satisfactory, Shri Muttemwar said that one million sq. collector area have been installed for water heating purposes.
