Bird flu update

As per the latest report received from the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory, Bhopal, samples of poultry birds collected from Bareilly and Shahjahanpur of Uttar Pradesh, which were part of the consignment transported from West Bengal, have tested negative.

Mortality of 130 birds is reported on 4.2.2008 from Murshidabad, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas. A total mortality of 1,32,883 poultry birds has been reported from Birbhum, Dakshin Dinajpur, Murshidabad, Nadia, South 24 Parganas, Burdwan, Bankura, Hooghly, Malda, Coochbehar, Purulia, Howrah and North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal. This number stood at 1,32,753 till yesterday.

A total of 298 Rapid Response Teams were engaged as on 04.02.2008, which completed culling of 1.34 lakh birds taking the cumulative figure of culling so far to 35.17 lakh.

Latest position of destruction of eggs and feed carried out till 04.02.2008 are 14,82,323 and 79,505 kg respectively.

The preventive culling of poultry birds in Assam continues. Out of the target population of 89,254 birds required to be culled in Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts of the state, 10,022 birds have since been culled. The poultry owners are also being paid compensation simultaneously with culling.

Preventive culling is, however, yet to commence in Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa
