Avian Influenza in West Bengal SITUATIONAL REPORT AS ON 12-3-2008 – NO HUMANS AFFECTED

Department of Animal Husbandry has notified fresh poultry deaths in Jiaganj and Raghunathganj-II blocks of Murshidabad district of West Bengal on 9th March, 2008 which has been confirmed as H5 infection.

• Active surveillance has started in Jiaganj block on 10th March and Raghunathganj-II on 11th March, 2003. A population of 28,182 has been covered and put under active surveillance. Seven cases of fever/ URI have been detected. In the hospital 21 fever/URI cases have reported. None of them have exposure history to infected poultry. 145 Animal Husbandry workers involved in culling activities have been medically examined and are under chemoprophylaxis. 607 health personnel are involved in surveillance activities.

• Adequate stock of Oseltamivir, personal protective equipments are available with the State/district authorities.

The situation is being monitored.
