Coal for Power Plants

for Ministry of Coal | Date - 23-02-2006

RAJYA SABHA

The despatch of coal to majority of the power plants according to Coal India Limited (CIL) is more than the contracted quantity. Only two power plants namely Talcher STPS and Calcutta Electricity Supply Company (CESC) have procured less coal against the contracted quantity with subsidiary companies of CIL during the year of 2005. Despatch of coal to Talcher STPS was less than the contracted quantity due to infrastructure constraints faced by the Talcher STPS. Similarly there was marginal shortfall in despatch of coal to CESC due to regulations imposed by the company from time to time for various reasons like maintenance of plant, railway track overhauling and controlling inventory.

This information was given by the Minister of Coal, Shri Shibu Soren in a written reply, in the Rajya Sabha today.
