Coal production shows growth

The total coal production in the country in May 2004 is estimated at 28.39 million tonnes (MT) as against 26.49 MT in the same month last year. Out of this 477 working mines of Public Sector Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 24.43 MT , 67 mines of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a joint Undertaking of Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of India, produced 2.71 MT and other 16 mines contributed 1.25 MT.

Coal off-take by CIL also increased from 24.55 MT in May, 2003 to 26.57 MT in May,2004. But the off-take of SCCL was slightly less, 2.77MT in May,2004 against 2.86 MT during the same month last year. Off-take from other working mines have increased from 1 MT to 1.10 MT. The closing stock in May,2004 was17.5 MT (CIL 17.08 MT, SCCL 0.19 MT and others 0.23 MT).
