Dayanidhi Maran to launch four million lines for North Zone from Srinagar

The Union Minister of Communications & Information Technology, Shri Dayanidhi Maran, will flag off the launching of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL)' s North Zone expansion capacity of 4 million lines from Srinagar on Tuesday in the presence of Jammu &Kashmir Chief Minister, Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

In order to facilitate an exponential growth in the mobiles services, BSNL has initiated the revised growth plans. Under this plan, four million lines have been allocated for roll out in the North Zone covering the States of Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh. Jammu & Kashmir has been specifically allocated an additional capacity of 2.8 lakh lines out of the 4 million capacity being expanded in the North Zone. This expansion plan by BSNL would extend coverage upto sub-divisional headquarters and would ensure coverage of all left out national highways.

Similar roll out plan for South Zone with 4 million lines is scheduled for mid-July and East Zone with 4million by August 2005. Recently, BSNL has launched the expansion in the West Zone by 1 million lines in Pune.

It may be recalled that BSNL in its earlier plans had rolled out countrywide mobile services, initially in October 2002, covering all the states having capacity of 4 million lines. As of date the subscriber base has grown 9.7 million. The initial plans were extended to cover upto the District Headquarters, pilgrimage centres and tourist spots. It also provided extensive coverage to the national highways.
