Depression over Westcentral Bay of Bengal likely to Intensify Fisherman on Eastern Coast States Advised Not to Venture into Sea

for Ministry of Earth Science | Date - 07-10-2010

Under the influence of depression developed over west-central Bay of Bengal, widespread rainfall with scattered heavy to very heavy falls would occur over coastal areas of Orissa and West Bengal during next 48 hrs and isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall would occur over coastal Andhra Pradesh during next 24 hrs. Squally winds with speed reaching 45-55 kmph would occur along and off north Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal coasts during next 48 hrs.

The depression over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved northwards and lay centered at 1130 hrs IST of today at 120 km east of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, 220 km south-southwest of Gopalpur in Orissa and 700 km southwest of Digha in West Bengal. India Meteorology Department advises fishermen not to venture into the sea off these coasts during this period. Sea condition will be rough to very rough along and off these coasts during the same period.

The current environmental condition and numerical weather prediction (NWP) models suggest that the system would intensify further and move initially northwards for some more time and then recurve north-northeastwards and cross Orissa coast between Gopalpur and Paradip by tonight.
