seats, 18 general seats and 2 seats reserved for scheduled castes. In the 2004 General Elections, Communist Party of India (Marxist) won 12 seats, Communist Party of India won 3 seats, while (S), Congress (KEC), MUL, IFDP won 1 seat each. One Independent candidate managed to win 1 seat. Of the total 1,50,86,428 votes polled, the CPM secured 47,54,567 votes followed by CPI with 11,90,526 votes, MUL 7,33,228 votes , KEC 3,53,905, JD(S) 3,40,111 and IFDP 2,56,411 votes. Independent candidates managed to secure 6 votes.Percentage-wise, the CPM secured 31.52% of the votes polled followed by CPI which secured 7.89%, the MUL 4.86%, KEC 2.35% and the JD(S) 2.25%. Independent candidates secured 4.60% of the total votes polled.The Indian National Congress (INC) had the largest number of contestants i.e., 17. The Party, however, could not win even a single seat though it secured the highest percentage of votes i.e., 32.13%.
