Insurance for Girls

A proposal is under consideration for the 11th Five Year Plan, wherein it is proposed that an insurance cover will be provided for the girl child as a safety net and also to enable the girl to receive a lump sum at the age of 18 years with suitable medical and educational components, to ensure her survival and overall development. This was stated by the Minister of State for Women and Child Development, Smt. Renuka Chowdhury in a reply to a question by Shri Ravi Prakash Verma in Lok Sabha today.

She further state that the proposal for a Conditional Cash and non-cash Transfer Scheme to ensure overall welfare of the Girl child is under consideration under the 11th Five Year Plan. The transfers are based on fulfillment of four important conditionalities viz birth and registration of the girl child, immunization, her retention in school and delaying her age of marriage beyond 18 years, she said.
