Justice Y. K. Sabharwal appointed as Chief Justice of India

The President has appointed Justice Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal, Judge of the Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 1st November, 2005 (forenoon). He will succeed Justice R. C. Lahoti who retires on 31st October, 2005.

Born on 14th January, 1942, Justice Sabharwal mainly practised Civil and Constitutional cases in Delhi High Court. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of Delhi High Court on 17.11.1986 and became a permanent Judge on 29.04.1987. He was appointed Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on 03.02.1999. He was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court on 28.01.2000.

Shri Justice Sabharwal served as Chairman, Supreme Court Legal Services Committee; Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA); Chairman, COFEPOSA Board; Chairman of Selection Committee for Appointment to the post of Chairman and Member (Judicial), Railway Claims Tribunal.

Justice Sabharwal held various positions as Secretary and President of Delhi High Court Bar Association for several years and was a member of the Bar Council of India representing Delhi from 1969 to 1973.

As a judge of Supreme Court, Justice Sabharwal delivered various important judgments dealing with Constitutional matters, Criminal Laws and other matters pertaining to Public Interest Litigation, such as cancellation of Petrol Pump licenses granted under the discretionary quota of Minister, Medical Scam, Environmental laws, JMM Case, and unauthorized constructions.
