for Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure | Date - 28-01-2010

CCI Decision

The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure today approved the project of mechanization of coal handling facilities and upgradation of General Cargo Berth (GCB) at outer harbour of Visakhapatnam Port on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) basis at Visakhapatnam at an estimated cost Rs.441.10 crores.

The mechanization, strengthening and deepening of the berth would enable the port to cater to 200,000 DWT vessels for handling coal with a capacity of 10.18 MTPA. The project is to be implemented within a period of 24 months from the date of award of the concession.

The project will help in de-congestion of the port due to faster unloading of coal after mechanization and strengthening of the berth and will facilitate handling capsize vessels resulting in economies of scale. The project will boost the industrial economy in the hinterland of the port leading to creation of job opportunities and will also provide environmental friendly handling of the coal cargo and will reduce the pollution.
