Power Minister says Capacity Addition Target for 10th Plan will be met

The Union Power Minister, Shri P.M. Sayeed today expressed confidence that the capacity addition targets for the 10th Plan would be achieved. Addressing the Members of the Consultative Committee attached to the Ministry of Power, the Power Minister said that on the whole, the 10th Plan achievements will certainly exceed achievements of the 8th and 9th Plan put together as far as capacity addition is concerned.

Today’s Consultative Committee meeting centered on issues related to the capacity addition programme in the power generation sector. A detailed presentation on the issue was made before the Members of the Parliament giving valuable inputs for further improving efficiency in the Power Sector. The detailed presentation was followed by discussions on the issue of capacity addition in power generation. Members cutting across party lines emphasized the need for development of the full potential existing in the hydel segment. They wanted the Ministry to put in place stringent measures to check cost and time overrun in the hydel sector.

Members appreciated the Ministry’s efforts in revamping the existing system and lauded the efforts of the Power Ministry for its new Rural Electrification Programme.

Thanking the Members, Hon’ble Minister of Power pointed out that active participation of each Member in the debate reflects the general mood to see power sector attain its desired goals. He further pointed out that the Ministry had come out with a National Electricity Policy, and Rural Electrification Programme and hoped that these measures will give a sense of direction to achieve the desired goals in a time bound manner.
