Rao Inderjit Singh takes over as Minister of State for Defence

Rao Inderjit Singh took over as the new Minister of State for Defence in South Block today.

Born on February 11, 1950 at Rewari, Haryana, Shri Singh has had a long and distinguished political career. An Honours graduate in Arts Shri Singh did his LLB from University of Delhi. He was first elected to Haryana Legislative Assembly in 1977 and again in 1982. He became Minister of State (independent charge) Food and Civil Supplies in Haryana in 1986. Rao Inderjit Singh was again elected to Haryana Legislative Assembly in 1991 and was made Cabinet Minister for Environment and Forest and Medical and Technical Education.

In 1998, he was elected for the first time to Lok Sabha from Mahendergarh Parliament Constituency of Haryana. Shri Singh was elected as MLA for the fourth time in the year 2000 to the Haryana Assembly. In 2004, he was again elected as Member of Lok Sabha from Mahendergarh and became Union Minister of State for External Affairs.

Shri Singh has been an ace shooter and has won National Championship in Skeet Discipline for three consecutive years. He won three Gold Medals in SAF Games and one Bronze Medal in Commonwealth Shooting Championship.

Shri Singh has made a significant contribution in providing educational facilities in rural areas. Angling, exploring nature in natural surroundings and reading are his favourite pastime. He has traveled to various countries as Member of the Official Delegation. Married to Manita on 06 December 1976, Shri Singh has two daughters.
