UNMOGIP

for Ministry of External Affairs | Date - 13-08-2014

UNMOGIP established under a UN Security Council Resolution in 1948 was meant to supervise the Cease Fire Line (CFL) established in Jammu and Kashmir in July 1949 under the Agreement between Military Representatives of India and Pakistan regarding the establishment of Cease-Fire Line in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. With the signing of the Simla Agreement in July 1972 and the establishment of the Line of Control the UNMOGIP’s role has become redundant. Government’s consistent position is that the UNMOGIP has outlived its relevance after the Simla Agreement between India and Pakistan.

In order to rationalize UNMOGIP’s presence in India, Government has taken various steps including asking the UNMOGIP to vacate government properties.

This Information was given by the Minister of state in the Ministry of External Affairs and Overseas Indian Affairs Gen. (Retd.) Dr. V. K. Singh in Lok Sabha today.
