(a) :The Umbrella Integrated Child Development Services Scheme was approved on 16th November, 2017 with a revised scope, structure and cost sharing ratio for continuation upto 30th November, 2018 alongwith the following sub-schemes:

a. Anganwadi Services (in place of ICDS)
b. Scheme for Adolescent Girls (in place of SABLA)
c. Child Protection Services (in place of Integrated Child Protection Services)
d. National Crèche Scheme (in place of Rajeev Gandhi National Crèche Scheme)

Objectives: Anganwadi Services under Umbrella ICDS Scheme (earlier known as ICDS) was launched in 1975 with the following objectives:
(i) to improve the nutritional and health status of children in the age-group 0-6 years;
(ii) to lay the foundation for proper psychological, physical and social development of the child;
(iii) to reduce the incidence of mortality, morbidity, malnutrition and school dropout;
(iv) to achieve effective co-ordination of policy and implementation amongst the various departments to promote child development; and
(v) to enhance the capability of the mother to look after the normal health and nutritional needs of the child through proper nutrition and health education.

The package of following six services is provided under the Anganwadi Services scheme:-
1. Supplementary nutrition,
2. Pre-school non-formal education,
3. Nutrition & health education,
4. Immunization,

5. Health check-up and
6. Referral services

Three of the six services, viz., immunization, health check-up and referral services, are delivered through NRHM & Public Health Infrastructure under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
(b) : In order to strengthen the performance of Anganwadi Services Scheme, Government has introduced 5-tier monitoring & review mechanism at different levels (National/ State/ District/ Block and Anganwadi level) for monitoring the status of Anganwadi Centres. Government has issued guidelines on 31.03.2011 for Constitution of Monitoring and Review Committees at different levels to review progress in implementation of the Scheme. Composition and key roles of such Committees at different levels have been defined.

MWCD is continuously monitoring the implementation of Anganwadi Services Scheme. Government has issued guidelines on 22.10.2010 for strengthening the existing monitoring and supervision visits to Anganwadi Services projects and AWCs. The guidelines include schedule of visits of different officials at the State level to AWCs/mini-AWCs in improving the quality of service delivery of the AWCs by addressing various problems/ bottlenecks and also to elicit views and perspectives from the community

The Anganwadi Services Scheme today operates through a network of 7075 fully operational Projects and 13.63 lakh AWCs as on 01.06.2018. The services are currently being provided to 892.77 lakh beneficiaries of which 719.41 lakh are children under six years of age and 173.35 lakh are pregnant women and lactating mothers. Pre-school education is provided to 325.92 lakh children of 3-6 years of age (164.31 lakh are boys and 161.61 lakh girls) as on 01.06.2018.
