Question : Distribution of Sugar

(a) the number and names of the States where sugar is being distributed/sold through the public Distribution System (PDS);

(b) the reasons for not distributing/selling sugar through PDS in Bihar; and

(c) the quantum of subsidy being provided on sugar by the Government at present?

(a): Presently, 23 States and 5 UT Administrations are participating in the scheme meant for distribution of sugar through PDS. The names of participating States/UTs are at Annexure.

(b): As intimated by the Government of Bihar, the levy sugar was distributed in the State during the financial year 2006-07, 2009-10 and 2010-11. The lifting and distribution of levy sugar was postponed as they suffered losses in distribution.

(c): The Central Government is reimbursing the fixed subsidy @ Rs. 18.50 per kg to the State/UTs, limited to the quantity based on their existing annual allocation of 27 lakh MT.
