Question : SANITATION CAMPAIGN UNDER PANCHAYATI RAJ



(a) whether the Government has undertaken sanitation campaign under the Panchayati Raj.

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) the number of districts in which the above campaign is being conducted, State-wise;

(d) the names of the districts for which the respective State Governments have requested the Union Government to release the next instalment of Centre’s share under the campaign; and

(e) the action taken by the Union Government in this regard?

(a) & (b): Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) is under implementation in 572 rural districts of the country. In rural areas, it is being implemented with the district as the unit of implementation. Funds under the Campaign are meant for the construction of individual household toilets; schools toilets; community complexes for women; toilets for Anganwadis and Balwadis, Production Centres and Rural Sanitary Marts, as well as taking up awareness generation among the people. The main goal of Government is to eradicate the practice of open defecation by the year 2012.

(c): A list indicating State-wise the number of districts covered under TSC is at the Annexe.

(d) & (e): Release of funds under the TSC is a continuous process in accordance with the utilization made by the districts. The proposals received from various districts for the release of subsequent instalments are received and processed regularly to release grants to them.
