Question : Sanitation Coverage

(a) the present status of coverage of rural sanitation in the country, State-wise and district-wise;
(b) whether it is true that the coverage of rural sanitation in the country has not achieved the desired level/target and if so, the reasons therefor;
(c) whether the Government has conducted any survey under Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) to find out the actual position of the sanitation coverage in the country and if so, the details thereof; and
(d) the funds earmarked and allocated for the said purpose during each of the last three years and the current year, State-wise?

(a) Sanitation coverage in rural areas of the country as on 24.07.2018 is 88.32%.State/UT-wise sanitation coverage is given at Annexure-1.District-wise sanitation coverage is given at Annexure-2.
(b) Rural sanitation coverage has increased from 38.7% in October 2014 to 88.4% as on 25.07.2018. It is expected to be 100% before 2nd October 2019.
(c) Yes, Madam. Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation had conducted a National Annual Rural Sanitation Survey(NARSS)between November2017 to March 2018through an Independent Verification Agency covering 90,000 households in 6,000 villages. As per the sample survey, rural sanitation coverage was found to be 77% (the corresponding coverage as per the SBM-G MIS was 76%).
(d) SBM(G) is a demand driven scheme, hence State/UT-wise funds are not allocated. However, State/UT-wise, Central share released under SBM(G) during the last 3 years and the current year is given at Annexure-3.
