Question : Procurement of Cotton


(a) whether Cotton Corporation of India had procured only eight lakh bales so far at Minimum Support Price (MSP) due to high prices of cotton;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether it is a fact that area under cotton had dropped by 7.3 per cent and is 118.81 lakh hectares; and

(d) if so, the details thereof?

(a) & (b): As on 3.8.2016, in the ongoing cotton season 2015-16 (October, 2015 to September, 2016), 8.44 lakh bales have been procured by Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) under Minimum Support Price (MSP) operations. The state-wise details of procurement made by CCI is as under:-

(c) & (d): Yes, Madam. The area under cotton cultivation during the current cotton season 2015-16 has decreased by around 7% to 118.81 lakh hectares as against 128.19 lakh hectares of previous year.
