Question : CLEARANCE TO NUCLEAR PROJECTS



(a) whether the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has recently cleared certain nuclear projects as reported in the `Economic Times` dated March 25, 2002;

(b) if so, the facts of the matter reported therein;

(c) the action taken by the Government to that effect; and

(d) the details thereof?

THE MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES, MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PERSONNEL, PUBLIC GRIEVANCES AND PENSIONS, MINISTER OF STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF PLANNING AND MINISTER OF STATE IN THE DEPARTMENTS OF ATOMIC ENERGY AND SPACE (SHRIMATI VASUNDHARA RAJE)

(a) & (b) Approval was accorded by the Government of India in March 2002 for :-


(i) Downward revision of completion cost estimate of Kaiga Atomic Power Project Unit 3&4 (2x220 MWe) from Rs.4213 crore to Rs.3282 crore, advancing the schedule for commencement of commercial operation from October 2008 (Kaiga 3) and October 2009 (Kaiga 4) to March 2007 and September 2009 respectively and change in the debt:equity ratio from 1:1 to 2:1.


(ii) Setting up of Rajasthan Atomic Power Project Units

(2x220 MWe) at an estimated completion cost of Rs.3072 crore with scheduled commencement of commercial operation in August 2007 (RAPP-5) and February 2008

(RAPP-6).


(c) & (d) Construction of Kaiga 3 & 4 is in progress. The first pour of reactor building raft concrete was achieved in March 2002. Civil construction and procurement actions for supply-cum-erection packages are in progress. The project is on schedule.


The excavation work for RAPP 5&6 is in progress. Main plant civil work package has been ordered and the first pour of reactor building raft concrete is expected to be achieved as planned. The project is on schedule.
