Question : COMMITTEE ON DEVELOPMENT OF NER



(a) whether the Government has constituted any committee wherein the representatives of the North-Eastern States could discuss major problems faced in the development of the region;

(b) if so, the details thereof;

(c) if not, the reasons therefor; and

(d) the steps taken by the Government to constitute a committee to solve the problems faced by the North-Eastern States?

MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) IN THE MINISTRY OF DEVELOPMENT OF NORTH EASTERN REGION (SHRI PABAN SINGH GHATOWAR)

(a) & (b) The Government has not constituted any special Committee to discuss major problems faced in the development of North Eastern States. However, the North Eastern Council at Shillong is statutorily constituted to act as regional planning body for the North Eastern Region including Sikkim. The plenary meetings of the North Eastern Council are attended by the Governors and Chief Ministers of the States. The North Eastern Council also regularly organises meetings on different sectors of the region which are attended by the representatives of the States. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region regularly reviews various developmental issues related to the region wherein the States’ representatives are involved.
