Question : Piped Drinking Water Supply

(a) whether only 18 per cent of the rural households are getting piped drinking water supply and if so, the facts thereof;
(b) whether the Union Government is planning to come up with schemes in coordination with the respective State Governments to provide piped drinking water to every household in the rural areas by 2024; and
(c) if so, the manner in which the Union Government proposes to coordinate with the State Government of Odisha and the time by which it plans to start the scheme?

(a) As reported by States on Integrated Management Information System (IMIS), out of total 17.87 crore rural households in the country, about 3.27 crore (i.e. 18.33%) rural household are getting drinking water from tap connection.

(b) & (c) As announced in the Union Budget Speech 2019-20, it has been envisaged to ensure piped water supply to all rural households by 2024 under the Jal Jeevan Mission. This Programme, under the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, will focus on integrated demand and supply side management of water at the local level, including creation of local infrastructure for source sustainability like rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge and management of household wastewater for reuse in agriculture. The Jal Jeevan Mission will converge with other Central and State Government Schemes including those in the State of Odisha to achieve its objectives of sustainable water supply management across the country.
