Question : SETTING UP OF HIGH COURT BENCHES



(a) the details of the benches of various High Courts set up in the country, location-wise;

(b) whether the Government propose to set up more benches of various High Courts in the country; and

(c) if so, the details thereof, State-wise/location-wise?

MINISTER OF STATE OF THE MINISTRY OF INFORMATION & BROADCASTING (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) AND THE MINISTER OF STATE OF THE MINISTRY OF LAW, JUSTICE & COMPANY AFFAIRS (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) (SHRI ARUN JAITLEY):

(a): The requisite information is laid on the Table of the House.

(b) & (c): A permanent Bench of the Gauhati High Court is proposed to be set up at Itanagar with effect from August 12, 2000. The Gauhati High Court (Establishment of a Permanent Bench at Itanagar) Order 2000 has been notified on July 18, 2000. Besides this, the State Government of Tamil Nadu and the Madras High Court have conveyed that they are agreeable to setting up a permanent Bench at Madurai. Necessary action in the matter will be taken by the Central Government after the infrastructural facilities like Court Buildings etc. are completed by the State Government to the satisfaction of the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

No complete proposal has been received from any other State Government for establishing a permanent Bench of the concerned High Court.
