Question : PURIFYING RIVER WATER



(a) whether river water can be supplied to the city dwellers by converting it into drinking water;

(b) if so, the reaction of the Government in this regard;

(c) the technologies being used for the said purpose; and

(d) the quantum of river water converted into drinking water and the names of the States getting its benefits, river-wise?

(a) to (c) Yes, Madam. Alongwith ground water, river water has been the traditional resource for providing drinking water after conventional treatment such as slow sand and rapid sand filtration followed by disinfection.

(d) The public water utilities under the State Government Departments and the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) are responsible for the day to day operations of treating water and supplying it for drinking purposes. The data on river-wise use of water converted to drinking water is not maintained by the Central Government.
