Question : Export of Jute

(a) whether the export of Jute is decreasing while import of jute is increasing in the country;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) the quantity and value of jute produced during each of the last three years and the current year, State-wise;

(d) whether the Union Government is aware that only one jute processing industry is functioning in Assam even though the State is producing huge quantum of raw jute;

(e) if so, whether the Government proposes to setting up of more jute processing industries in Assam; and

(f) if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor?

As may be seen from the above, there is no decline in the exports during the current year. However, owing to a shortfall in the domestic crop of raw jute in the Jute year 2015-16, ending on 30th June, 2016; there has been an increase in raw jute import in the above period.

(d): There are 9 jute manufacturing and processing units in Assam. The details are given below:-

(e) & (f): The Government has no plan to set up jute industries, at present. However, Government provides an enabling environment to private entrepreneurs through its various jute sector schemes for setting up jute production units.
