Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF THE STATE IN THE MINISTRY OF COAL (DR. DASARI NARAYANA RAO)

(a) : The statewise details of lignite blocks alongwith total reserves of lignite in the country are as under :-

State	No. of blocks	Gross Reserve	explored	in Million tonnes
Tamilnadu 20 29458.03 Rajasthan 36 2292.06 Gujarat 22 1747.25 Jammu & 1 20.25 Kashmir Kerala 2 10.80
Total 81 33528.39

As regards coal, a cumulative total of 245.69 billion tonnes of coal resources have been estimated in the country as on 01.01.2004.

(b) to (e): Lignite is a form of coal and therefore coal includes lignite. The captive mining policy being pursued in case of coal is equally applicable to lignite. So far one lignite block has been allocated to a private company under this policy.
