Question : BIGAMY CASES



(a) whether the Government are aware that in the absence of adequate mechanism many bigamy cases are not reported;

(b) if so, whether the Government propose to make certain amendments in the Hindu Marriage Act and IPC in this regard;

(c) if so, the details thereof;

(d) the time by which the amendments are likely to be made in this regard; and

(e) if not, the reasons therefore?

(a) to (e): Under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, bigamous marriage is void and provisions of sections 494 and 495 of Indian Penal Code, 1860 (45 of 1860) have been made applicable to such marriage.

As far as the mechanism under the Indian Penal code is concerned, the required information is being collected from Ministry of Home Affairs and will be laid on the Table of the House.
