Question : Redevelopment of Calicut Railway Station

(a) whether the Government has taken any initiative for redevelopment of Calicut Railway Station along with Chennai and Bangalore Railway Stations and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the number of trains connecting Calicut and Bangalore is comparatively very low when compared to other major cities in South India and if so, the details thereof;

(c) whether the Government has any plans for a pitline at Westhill at Kozhikode and if so, the details regarding the same; and

(d) whether the Government has noted delays in commissioning of train number 16512/511 to Kozhikode and also trains connectivity between Mangalore and Rameshwaram and if so, the details regarding the commencement of these services by Railways?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) to (d) of UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 661 BY SHRI M.K. RAGHAVAN TO BE ANSWERED IN LOK SABHA ON 20.07.2022 REGARDING REDEVELOPMENT OF CALICUT RAILWAY STATION.

(a) Yes, Sir. Calicut (Kozhikode), K.S.R. Bengaluru and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MG Ramachandran Central (Chennai Central) Railway Stations have been identified for conducting techno-economic feasibility studies. Based on the outcome of these studies, the stations will be taken up for development in phases. Chennai Egmore and Bengaluru Cantt. station have been taken up under major upgradation of stations scheme of Indian Railways. Sir M. Visvesawarya Terminal Railway Station in Bengaluru has recently been redeveloped and commissioned.
(b) At present, two pairs of trains viz: 16527/16528 Yesvantpur-Kannaur Express (daily) and 16565/16566 Yesvantpur-Mangaluru Central Express (weekly) are serving Kozhikode-Bengaluru sector which are considered adequate for the present level of traffic.
(c) Pit lines are planned as per the operational and maintenance requirement of Indian Railways. In Palakkad division, Mangaluru Central and Palakkad Town have coach maintenance facilities which are adequate for present requirement. At present, pitline at Westhill is not under consideration.
(d) Extension and introduction of new train services is an ongoing process on Indian Railways subject to operational feasibility, traffic demand and availability of resources etc.
