Question : DEARTH OF SPORTS INSTRUCTORS



(a) whether there is a dearth of sports instructors/coaches in the Sports Authority of India (SAI);

(b) if so, the details thereof and the reasons therefor;

(c) the action taken/proposed to be taken by the Government in this regard including filling-up of the vacant posts in SAI;

(d) whether the SAI has any proposal to recruit or hire coaches and supporting staff; and

(e) if so, the details thereof?

THE MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, YOUTH AFFAIRS AND SPORTS (SHRI SARBANANDA SONOWAL)

(a) Yes, Madam.

(b) to (e): Sports Authority of India (SAI) has total sanctioned strength of 1524 coaches. To fill up the vacancies of coaches at Entry Level, SAI has already initiated the process of recruitment of regular Coaches in a phased manner. In the first phase, SAI had advertised for 200 posts of Assistant Coaches and after following the laid down selection process, (written test/ interview), 163 Assistant Coaches have been appointed in SAI. The discipline-wise details are given below:

 
Athletics - 18 Archery - 12 Badminton - 07 Boxing - 37 Cycling - 01 Fencing - 04 Hockey - 10 Gymnastic - 02 Judo - 13 Kayak & Canoe - 02 Swimming - 05 Taekwondo - 20 Volleyball - 04 Weightlifting - 09 Wrestling - 10 Wushu - 09 Total: - 163
Further, Coaches on contractual basis are also being appointed on need basis at different training centres of SAI. As there is sufficient supporting staff and hence no other supporting staff has been recruited.

The present strength of regular coaches in SAI is 1148 and 376 posts of coaches are vacant.
