Question : Mapping of Mineral Deposits

(a) whether any survey has been conducted or mapping has been done by the Government with a view to find out new mines;
(b) if so, the details thereof along with mineral deposits in different parts of the country at present;
(c) the future plan of the Government for mining these mineral deposits; and
(d) whether there is any plan for extraction and mapping of mineral deposits in the country especially Jharkhand and if so, the details thereof along with locations identified for the purpose?

Answer given by the minister

MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR MINES, POWER, COAL AND NEW & RENEWABLE ENERGY (SHRI PIYUSH GOYAL)
(a): Exploration is a continuous process and the estimation of quantity of mineral resources is carried out on the basis of survey/ exploration of minerals. Exploration agencies like Geological Survey of India [GSI], Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited [MECL], State DGMs, State/ Central Undertakings and private sector companies are engaged in the exploration of mineral deposits in the country.
(b): During 2016-17, GSI has taken up a total of 194 mineral exploration programmes in different parts of the country out of which 5 programmes are in the State of Jharkhand. Further, reconnaissance stage mineral exploration of 30 blocks by MECL are under progress out of which 4 blocks are in Jharkhand. As per the information available with Indian Bureau of Mines, the mineral-wise reserves/ resources available in the country is at Annexure.
(c) & (d): Under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015, for major minerals, the mineral concession can be allotted through auctioning of two instruments viz. Prospecting Licence–cum–Mining Lease or Mining Lease. The power to grant these mineral concessions vests in the State Governments. Further, for minor minerals, the State Governments are the custodians and mining leases/ licences are granted by them. The extraction of minerals, therefore, depends on the grant of the mineral concessions by the State Government.
Subsequent to the enactment of MMDR Amendment Act, 2015, 21 mining blocks in the States of Andhra Pradesh (1), Chhattisgarh (3), Jharkhand (3), Odisha (3), Rajasthan (3), Karnataka (7) and Madhya Pradesh (1) have been successfully auctioned by the respective State Governments till date. In Jharkhand 2 blocks of limestone in Harihaspura Block-I and Block-II, District Ramgarh and (ii) 1 block of gold in Pahadia, District Singhbhum West have been auctioned.
