Question : CYBER ATTACKS



(a) whether the Government has taken adequate steps to protect confidential information pertaining to defence sector, from cyber attacks and if so, the details thereof;

(b) whether the Government has taken note of rise in cyber attacks in defence sector over the years and if so, the details thereof; and

(c) the other steps being taken or proposed to be taken by the Government to ensure foolproof protection from cyber attacks?

(a) to (c): Yes, Madam. Government has taken steps to protect confidential information pertaining to Defence sector from Cyber attack. Government has approved setting up of Cyber Operation Centres for threat management and mitigation as part of Framework for Enhancing Cyber Security of Indian Cyberspace.

Cyber attacks are largely faced by internet connected Personal Computers (PCs) and these relate to unauthorized data access, denial of service, compromise of login credentials etc. To protect important and confidential data from Cyber attack, the operational networks of the Armed Forces are air gapped from internet. Defence Services have established Cyber Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) to prevent and react to cyber attacks. Safeguards have been instituted in the form of audits and physical checks. Policies, guidelines and procedures have been laid down and periodic cyber security advisories are being issued.
