Question : Power Generation from Diesel in A&N Islands

(a) whether electricity generation in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is wholly dependent on diesel generators;

(b) if so, the details thereof and the quantum of diesel consumed for providing power to the islands;

(c) the total cost of providing power to the Islands and the total units of power consumed during each of the last three years; and

(d) whether there are any plans to introduce renewable energy projects on the islands, if so, details thereof?

(a) & (b) : As reported by Andaman and Nicobar Islands, at present, 90% of the installed capacity & 94% of the total generation is from Diesel Generation and balance 10% of installed capacity & 6% generation is from Renewable Sources.

The total installed capacity includes 98.52 MW DG power plants comprising of 178 DG sets and 10.35 MW Renewable Energy power plants comprising of 5.25 MW Small Hydro & 5.1 MWp Solar PV.

The annual consumption of Diesel for providing power to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is 73,500 KL during financial year 2014-15.

(c) : The details of the total cost of providing power to the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and the total units of power consumed during the last three years is given at Annex.

(d) : Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) has sanctioned a Solar Park of 100 MWp capacity for A&N Islands on 15.05.2015. The work for establishment of Solar PV plants have been entrusted to NTPC at South Andaman Island, NLC (Neyveli Lignite Corporation) at North & Middle Andaman and REIL (Rajasthan Electronics & Instruments Limited) at Havelock and Neil Islands.
