Question : Accreditation System for Legal Universities

(a) whether the Government proposes to abolish the 3 year LL.B course along with correspondence law degrees as recommended by the Madras High Court and if so, the details thereof; and
(b) whether the Government has set up/proposes to set up an accreditation system for legal universities and if so, the details thereof?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO PARTS (a) AND (b) OF LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION No. 71 FOR REPLY ON 26th JUNE, 2019 REGARDING ACCREDITATION SYSTEM FOR LEGAL UNIVERSITIES


(a):- The Bar Council of India, the authorized body has stated that it has decided not to abolish 3 year LLB course as the same is statutorily provided in the Advocates Act, 1961. It has further informed that the Bar Council of India does not recognize any correspondence law degree or any distance law degree.

(b):- Bar Council of India has informed that the ‘Bar Council of India Rules of Legal Education’ part IV chapter III clause 28 to 31 provides for the Accreditation System, which includes provisions of Accreditation Committee, method of the application for accreditation and rules for accreditation for Legal Education.
