(a) There are 262 permissible works under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (Mahatma Gandhi NREGA). Of this, 182 works are related to Natural Resource Management out of which 85 are water related works and out of total works, 164 works are related to agriculture and allied activities. These works are derived from Schedule I of the Act. In the Schedule I, the works have been classified under major categories as under :
As per Schedule I, Section 4(3), Para 4(1),
I. Category: A: Public works relating to Natural Resource Management
II. Category: B: Community assets or Individual assets for vulnerable sections (only for households in Paragraph 5)
III. Category: C: Common Infrastructure (Including for NRLM) Compliant Self Help Groups
IV. Category: D: Rural Infrastructure
In the Management information System (MIS) of Mahatma Gandhi NREGS, provision has been made to capture the details of works in 17 categories as under:

According to the above 17 categories, the category wise details of completed and ongoing works under Mahatma Gandhi NREGS during last five financial years is given at Annexure-I
(b) District wise details of completed and ongoing works along with expenditure incurred under Mahatma Gandhi NREGS in the State of Maharashtra during last five financial years is given at Annexure -II.
(c) Out of 262 permissible works under the Scheme, 164 works are related to agriculture and agriculture allied activities. As per Schedule I, Section 4(3), para 2, “ The District Programme Coordinator shall ensure that at least 60% of the works to be taken up in a district in terms of cost shall be for creation of productive assets directly linked to agriculture and allied activities through development of land, water and trees”.
As per Schedule I of the Act, contour trenches and contour bunds are permissible activities. There are 1924 beneficiaries covered under the work of Construction of earthen contour bund and construction of staggered trench work in the State of Maharashtra since inception.
The district wise details of Construction of earthen contour bund and construction of staggered trench work in the individual land taken up in the State of Maharashtra under Mahatma Gandhi NREGS since inception is at Annexure-III.
(d) The provision of use of machinery has been made for the activities which cannot be carried out by manual labour, where use of machine may become essential for maintaining the quality and durability of work to be completed under Mahatma Gandhi NREGS. No labour displacing machine has been allowed for execution of work under the Scheme. A suggested list of machines which can be used under Mahatma Gandhi NREGA is as under:
