Railway freight revenue goes up by 17.50 Per Cent During April-March 2006-07

The Railways have generated Rs.41754.85 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during April 2006-March 2007 as compared to Rs. 35534.69 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 17.50 per cent.

Railways carried 728.41 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-March 2007 as compared to 667.20 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 9.17 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 439596 million during April-March 2006 to 475046 million during April-March 2007, an increase of 8.06 per cent.

The earnings from freight traffic during the month of March 2007 was Rs. 4100.55 crore, compared to Rs. 3550.46 crore during the corresponding period last year showing an increase of 15.49 per cent. Railways carried 72.07 million tonnes (MTs) of freight traffic during the month as compared to 66.19 million tonnes of freight traffic during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 8.88 per cent. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 43564 million during the month of March 2006 to 46009 million during March 2007, an increase of 5.61 per cent.

Of the total earnings during the month of March 2007, Rs. 1566.87 crore came from transportation of 31.12 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs. 333.55 crore from 3.97 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs. 371.00 crore from 7.09 million tonnes of cement, Rs. 243.61 crore from 3.08 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs. 256.26 crore from 3.67 million tonnes iron ore for exports, Rs. 179.65 crore from 2.85 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs. 213.32 crore from 1.99 million tonnes of iron & steel for steel plants, Rs. 183.29 crore from 5.00 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants and Rs. 753.00 crore from 13.30 million tonnes of other goods.
