(a) whether the Government has set up any training institute to provide training or make fishermen aware of the issues related to safety and maritime boundary;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) if not, whether the Government proposes to set up such a training institute; and

Statement referred to in reply to the Lok Sabha starred question no. 146 put in by Shri Rajendra Dhedya Gavit, Member of Parliament for answer on 02-07-2019 regarding “Training to Fishermen”.

(a) to (d). The Central Institute of Fisheries, Nautical & Engineering Training (CIFNET) functioning under the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is the nodal institution for training of fishermen and provides training in various fields for fishermen regarding safety at sea during fishing, handling of marine electronics equipments for safe navigation and seamanship etc besides their regular mandate. It has its Head Quarters at Kochi and two more units at Chennai and Visakhapatnam. In addition, the Government of Andhra Pradesh intimated that one of their institute, State Institute of Fisheries Technology (SIFT), Kakinada is also imparting training to coastal fishers on sea safety and coastal security aspects in collaboration with CIFNET.
